The Little Bavarian with Big Character – The 1963 BMW 700 CS

A rational design language with clean lines – that’s modern design of the 1960s. The compact BMW 700 was styled exactly in this spirit by Giovanni Michelotti. For BMW, the 700 marked a successful breakthrough into the small car segment - something the Isetta of the 1950s hadn’t quite achieved. The success of this sporty compact model came at a crucial time, as BMW was on the brink of being taken over by Daimler-Benz in 1959.

The 700 was produced as both a coupé and a saloon - the former, of course, being the more exclusive and sportier variant. Especially so when, like the example offered here, it is equipped with the most powerful version of the air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine. Back then, its competitors included the NSU Sport Prinz and the Renault Floride – both also with rear-mounted engines. In the BMW 700, this configuration explains the car's distinctive coupé proportions.

This particular 700 shines in Oleander Red and is fitted with a removable transistor radio. The paintwork has recently been refreshed, and the interior shows little patina, suggesting it has likely been refurbished. We are offering this rare small car from the golden era of the economic boom with a fresh veteran technical inspection from autumn 2024.
