HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
The coveted top-of-the-range model of the 916-generation Alfa Romeo Spider: featuring the iconic “Busso” V6 engine. Now an up-and-coming classic. This very fine example was delivered new on 16 August 2001 in Germany and was imported into the Netherlands on 21 May 2004, where the car has in fact had only two owners since then. The first Dutch owner purchased the Alfa in 2004 with a reported mileage of over 70,000 km and owned the car until 2017. Since then, the car has been owned by a family of enthusiasts, passing from son to father, and subsequently to his brother. The car has been well maintained, with a significant amount of maintenance carried out recently, ensuring it is roadworthy for its next owner. A record of the maintenance carried out is available, as are the service history, owner’s manuals and MOT certificates. The car features a number of attractive and sought-after options and extras, such as a Novitec exhaust system.
EXTERIOR
The Alfa is beautifully finished in black metallic paint, which contrasts nicely with the red leather interior and the red brake calipers. The alloy wheels are 17 inches in diameter and fitted with new tyres all round. Visually, the car has no damage, apart from normal signs of wear and tear. The rubber seals and chrome trim are still original. The soft top is also still original; this could be replaced with a better-quality one. The Spider’s design is typically Italian: flowing lines, a low nose and a sporty, elegant appearance. The car was designed by Pininfarina and therefore has a timeless character that still attracts a lot of attention today.
INTERIOR
Inside, the Spider offers a sporty cockpit with classic Alfa Romeo details such as deep dials, leather upholstery and a driver-oriented seating position. The red leather Momo interior is a real eye-catcher. The seats are free from tears but do have some entry-level wear. Windows and mirrors are electrically operated. This also applies to the soft top, which is a sought-after option. Furthermore, the interior is equipped with air conditioning and climate control. A radio is unnecessary, as the sound of the Novitec exhaust is too beautiful not to be enjoyed in its purest form. With the roof down, the sound of the V6 comes into its own, making every journey special. Original tools are present in the boot.
TECHNICAL
The impressive engine is a work of art to behold and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This high-revving Italian power unit was designed by Giuseppe Busso and is praised for its fantastic sound, linear power delivery and aesthetics. The car sprints to 100 km/h in just over 7 seconds, with a top speed of approx. 230 km/h. To stop quickly, large brakes are required, which is why the factory has fitted larger front brake discs (equivalent to those of the 156 GTA). The brake discs and pads have been replaced at both the front and rear. A new master cylinder, new brake hoses and new handbrake cables have also been fitted. The car drives, brakes and changes gear well. Furthermore, the following maintenance has recently been carried out:
- new oil and filters
- 6 new spark plugs
- new timing belt
- new radiator
- new air conditioning compressor
- front and rear subframes removed, re-sandblasted and coated
- new front and rear suspension arms fitted
- underbody treated against corrosion
- 4 new tyres fitted
GENERAL
The 2001 Alfa Romeo Spider 3.0 V6 24V is a characterful Italian roadster that combines sportiness, elegance and emotion. This model belongs to the last generation of classic Alfa Romeo roadsters before the arrival of more modern, more electronically-controlled sports cars. The version with the 3.0-litre Busso V6 engine, in particular, is regarded by enthusiasts as one of the most beautiful and best-sounding Alfa Romeos ever built.
Under the bonnet lies a naturally aspirated 3.0 V6 with 24 valves, producing around 220 hp. The famous ‘Busso’ engine is renowned for its unique sound: a deep, mechanical rumble at low revs that transitions into a characteristic Italian roar as the revs rise. Paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, this delivers a pure and engaging driving experience. Although comfort and modern technology are less extensive than in contemporary convertibles, this car is all about the experience and the feel of the drive. The Spider 3.0 V6’s handling is sporty and direct. Thanks to its relatively low weight and powerful engine, the car feels lively, especially on winding roads. Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson praised the Alfa Romeo 916 V6 for its perfect steering, an excellent chassis, incredible acceleration, plenty of grip and its stunning appearance. He even called it a mini-Ferrari.
Today, the Alfa Romeo Spider 3.0 V6 24V enjoys a special status among car enthusiasts. Well-maintained examples are becoming increasingly rare and sought-after, partly due to the iconic Busso engine, which is no longer in production. As a result, this Spider is regarded not only as a stylish convertible, but also as a future classic with emotional and collectable value.
