Beschreibung

Rolls-Royce introduced the Silver Shadow II in 1977 as a carefully developed evolution of the long-running Silver Shadow. The revised model featured rack-and-pinion steering, improved front suspension geometry and updated exterior detailing, most notably its impact-absorbing bumpers and front air dam. These changes sharpened the driving experience without diminishing the refinement for which the model had become renowned. Purchased by our vendor from respected Rolls-Royce specialist Fiennes Restoration in 2021, this striking Silver Shadow II has covered just 48,000 miles from new and has had only two former keepers. Its substantial history file demonstrates consistent care dating back to 1979, with invoices from recognised Rolls-Royce specialists supporting its impressive maintenance history.

The car was already an exceptional example when acquired, being delivered with a new exhaust system and new tyres. However, as the owner of several particularly fine motor cars, including a low-mileage Silver Spur, our vendor elected to pursue an even higher standard. He therefore entrusted the Shadow to his preferred Rolls-Royce mechanic, formerly of renowned marque specialist Broughtons.

The first major undertaking was a comprehensive overhaul of the braking system. All four corners received new brake discs, pads and calipers, while new road springs were fitted throughout. The car currently sits particularly well on a set of Silver Spur alloy wheels, selected in accordance with our vendor's personal preference. For those seeking greater originality, the original steel wheels and refurbished Rolls-Royce wheel trims remain available and may be substituted following the auction, with the vendor retaining whichever set is not selected. The maintenance programme continued throughout the following four years, with seemingly no area overlooked. The air-conditioning system was refurbished and is reported to operate effectively, while the hydraulic pressure vessels and associated components were renewed or restored as required. Labour charges alone during the present ownership are understood to have totalled approximately £20,000, in addition to the considerable cost of parts. The owner's exacting approach is perhaps best demonstrated by the recent attention given to the braking system. When its performance was felt to be anything less than entirely satisfactory, the car was immediately returned to his ex-Broughtons mechanic for further investigation. Components were checked, renewed or refurbished as necessary, ensuring the system performed as it should. The underside and mechanical presentation reflect the exceptional level of expenditure lavished upon the car.

Presented in a particularly attractive two-tone combination of metallic blue over silver, the Shadow's formal coachwork remains imposing and beautifully proportioned. Inside, cream leather is complemented by deep blue carpets and extensive polished wood veneer. The leather retains a pleasing degree of character, while the dashboard, instruments and switchgear display the craftsmanship expected of a hand-built Rolls-Royce. Our vendor is an admittedly obsessive custodian whose standards are already familiar to Historics. A Vauxhall Cresta previously entrusted to us was of similarly remarkable quality and became the most valuable example of its type sold at auction when offered under the hammer. Advancing years have prompted the vendor to reduce his collection and allow another custodian to benefit from the considerable care and expenditure invested in this car. With only 48,000 miles recorded, two former keepers, a substantial history file and four years of intensive specialist attention, this is an exceptional Silver Shadow II. Viewing is highly recommended, as its condition and quality are best appreciated in person. Consigned by Mathew Priddy
