“The Giant Slayer”

Ginetta G4R

FIA HTP until 2036

Recently re-built by the factory

Founded in 1957 by the four Walklett brothers Bob, Ivor, Trevers and Douglas, Ginetta started out in North Yorkshire as a specialist sports car manufacturer before moving to Essex in 1962. Their new G4 was based on its G3 predecessor, and the first Ginetta not specifically designed to go racing. It did soon enough though, with works-connected driver Chris Meek finding success in a 1.5-litre version bored out to 1650cc. Meek suggested to Ivor Walklett – the designer among the four brothers – that the G4 would be able to transfer its power much more effectively with the use of independent rear suspension.

The G4R was born from that thought and equipped with the Ford-based 1.6-litre Lotus Twin-Cam engine that is also found in the Lotus Elan, it would prove to be a race winner in local sports car events at Silverstone, Snetterton and Mallory Park, while also competing internationally at the Nürburgring, Montlhéry and Sebring. In total, 12 G4Rs were built in period. After they sold Ginetta, the Walkletts revived the design in the nineties when they formed a new company called Design And Research Engineering (DARE) UK Ltd.

In more recent years in historic racing, the punchy G4R has gained fame for its giant-slaying capabilities in pre-66 GT racing. While usually having the measure of the class-rivaling Elan, Ginetta G4R’s have claimed overall podiums and threatened to produce outright wins until finally succeeding in the Masters Gentlemen Drivers race at Brands Hatch in 2024. Racking up the class wins, the G4R also grabbed overall honours in the 2022 Gentleman Drivers championship as well as an overall victory in the Spa 3-hour race in 2025.

The car on sale started its life as a well-known and original G4 race that was successfully raced by Dave Randall in the UK. It was featured on the cover of “The History of the Ginetta G4” by marque specialist Trevor Pynam and comes with a certificate of originality. It was converted to G4R spec by DARE in 2025 and the work included a full rebuilt, the addition of independent rear suspension and the installation of a new 190 Hp Craig Beck Twincam engine.
