The Alpina B10 V8 Touring is one of those cars that ticks almost every box for an enthusiast: performance, comfort, rarity, and everyday usability. Built between 1998 and 2004, only 286 B10 V8 Tourings ever left Alpina’s headquarters in Buchloe, and just 82 of those were pre-facelift cars like this one. That makes this example a rare opportunity to own a very special piece of Alpina history. With its hand-built 4.6-litre V8, long-distance comfort, and practical Touring body, it’s a car that’s just as happy eating up autobahn miles as it is turning heads at a cars & coffee meet.

Exterior: Finished in BMW Individual Blue Metallic, the color suits the B10 V8 Touring perfectly, deep and classy in the shade, but absolutely glowing in the sun. The E39 shape works so well as a Touring, and the Alpina touches give it just the right amount of presence. Up front, you’ve got the signature Alpina lip, along the sides the classic gold decals, and filling the arches are 20-inch Alpina Classic wheels that really set it apart. The paint has a smooth, glossy shine and the body is free from the common E39 rust issues. The only small marks to note are a few stone chips and some light scratches on two of the wheels, nothing out of the ordinary for its age. Overall, it’s a car you’d be proud to be seen in.

Interior: Step inside and you’re greeted by a rare half-leather, half-Alcantara blue interior with matching wood trim. It’s a combination you don’t see often, and it works beautifully here. The Alcantara is in good condition, the seats are comfortable with no rips or splits, and while the leather dye isn’t perfect in places, the cabin as a whole feels well looked after. Equipment levels are exactly what you’d expect from a top-of-the-range Alpina of the late ’90s. You get rear window blinds, electric steering wheel adjustment, memory seats, a glass sunroof, and even the option to watch TV on the infotainment system, something you don’t see every day in a car of this era. Everything inside works as it should, making it a pleasant place to spend time.

Engine & Mechanics: Under the bonnet is the heart of this Alpina, a 4.6-litre V8. While it started life as the BMW 540i’s 4.4, Alpina took it apart and rebuilt it with their own upgrades:

• Larger bore and stroke (93 mm / 85 mm)
• Forged Mahle pistons
• Rebalanced crankshaft with lighter, stronger rods
• Ported cylinder heads and revised cam profiles
• Alpina intake, airbox, and freer-flowing exhaust

The result is 347 horsepower and a broad spread of torque, making it feel effortless in everyday driving and strong when you want it to be. The gearbox is a ZF 5-speed automatic with Alpina’s Switch-Tronic, letting you change gear via steering wheel buttons. Shifts are quicker, thanks to Alpina’s ECU tune, and the taller final gear makes it a superb high-speed cruiser. Brakes and steering have also been tweaked for a more precise, confident feel. This example drives exactly as it should. It starts easily, the V8 runs smoothly with a great exhaust note, the gearbox shifts cleanly, and the brakes feel solid.

History and documentation: This B10 V8 Touring was sold new in Überlingen, Germany in 1998 and made its way to Sweden in 2000. It comes with its full book pack, including a well-stamped service book, plus a file of paperwork including Swedish MOT records. Everything points to a car that’s been cared for throughout its life.
