The Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider debuted in 1958 as Alfa’s top-tier, open-top flagship. Built by Carrozzeria Touring in Milan. Under the hood sits a twin-cam 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox, making it a surprisingly comfortable and capable long-distance cruiser. With just under 3,400 examples built through 1962, it remains a rare, collectible roadster that offers the style of an exotic coachbuilt car at a far more approachable price point.
Exterior: Looking at this 1959 Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider, three things immediately strike you: the unique and lovely blue color, the exceptional quality of the paintwork, and the gorgeous late '50s / early '60s Italian styling. A bit less than 10 years ago, the car underwent a restoration. It was a solid car that had survived rust well from the beginning. Minor bodywork was carried out, followed by an exceptional paint job. Today, 10 years later, the paint still looks excellent, with nice and sharp body lines and excellent panel gaps. The chrome work is good – though not perfect, with a few minor imperfections on the bumpers. The car sits on its original wheels, which have been properly restored and shod in the correct Michelin tires. The stance of this car is excellent, sitting quite low and perfectly level. Just look at the gorgeous design of the 2000 Touring Spider; you get a look that resembles other Italian icons in the €500,000+ range.
Interior: Inside the 2000 Touring Spider, you find a mainly original interior with the expected patina that comes with age. It is a charming place to spend time, featuring a simplistic and functional layout, classic Veglia instrumentation, and comfortable seating. The car still retains its original carpets and red vinyl interior across all parts, except for the bottom portion of the seats. The car remains in its original color combination as specified in the Alfa Romeo certificate. It also comes with an original hardtop, which is a wonderful addition that extends the driving season and gives the car a lovely coupé silhouette when fitted.
Engine & Mechanics: This is a very well-sorted Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider. At the same time the body was restored, extensive mechanical work was also carried out. The engine was split, receiving new piston rings, crank bearings, rod bearings, new timing chains, reworked heads, and new seals. The car also received a new clutch, overhauled brakes, new ignition components, and much more. Since then, the car has been continuously maintained, recently receiving a new brake master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, and a split and resealed gearbox. All of this work is documented, and the car comes with a wealth of parts receipts and workshop bills. Today, the car is a lovely, smooth cruiser that feels very well put together, featuring soft, supple suspension and tight steering. This is the birth engine for the car. Matching numbers.
History & Documentation: This Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider has a unique and fascinating history that is fully traceable. The car was sold new in Sweden and was first owned by Swedish royalty. Its first user was Kerstin Bernadotte, who was married to Swedish Prince Carl Johan. In 1965, the car moved on, and its ownership history since then has been completely documented. The same goes for the mileage, which can be verified through old MOT records dating back to 1977, when the car had covered 60,000 km. Today, the odometer reads 88,000 km, which is highly likely to be the correct original mileage given the documentation that accompanies the car.
