The Open Star of the ’90s – Mercedes 220 E Cabriolet

Introduced in the mid-1980s, the W124 series bears the unmistakable design signature of Bruno Sacco, who served as Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz from 1975. Together with his team, the Italian designer shaped a look defined by understated, modern elegance—setting the tone for the brand’s visual identity for decades.

Design historian Paolo Tumminelli described the W124 range as Sacco’s “masterpiece”, noting its remarkable ability to appear modest or glamorous, rational or emotional, depending on its colour and the angle from which it is viewed. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (M 111) delivers 150 hp, ensuring smooth and confident performance, complemented by refined running characteristics and exceptional efficiency thanks to advanced aerodynamics. “You simply cannot get more complete—inside and out,” Tumminelli concluded.

Out of over 2.5 million W124 models produced, just 8,458 units left the factory as cabriolets with this four-cylinder engine—making it not only an exceptionally well-rounded vehicle, but also a rare one. The electrically operated fabric roof is well-insulated, ensuring a comfortable driving experience even in unfavourable weather conditions.

The example offered here still wears its original factory paintwork in Almandine Red (Almadinrot), paired with the original black fabric soft top. The black leather interior is in outstanding condition, having been carefully maintained throughout its life.

The current owner acquired the car in 2020 from its original owner and has driven it regularly ever since. Over the course of 31 years, the car has covered just 88,500 kilometres—explaining its near show-car condition. Just in time for its 30th anniversary, it passed the Swiss veteran vehicle inspection. Alongside regular servicing and mechanical upkeep, a new wiring harness ensures its excellent technical condition.
