The 10th out of just 23 examples of the 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso configured in right-hand-drive form, chassis number 5461 was originally specified in Blu (19391) over Grigio Connolly hide with matching grey carpets and headlining. Reportedly, this was a unique colour combination among those select few cars delivered to the United Kingdom.

Ordered by the famed Maranello Concessionaires of Egham in April 1963, the Ferrari was completed on 27 December ahead of being delivered on 25 January 1964. It was first owned by Ernest “Phil” Scragg—a competitive post-war club-level racer born in Macclesfield. He would later pivot to hillclimb events, winning his class in the British championship in 1959 aboard a Jaguar-engined HWM. In fact, the Berlinetta Lusso proved to be something of a rare Italian indulgence for Scragg, who also owned a Jaguar XKSS, Aston Martin DB4 GT, and the final Jaguar E-Type Lightweight built in period. He registered the Ferrari with the numberplate “PS 1216”, which the car wears today.

Despite Scragg’s motorsport exploits, it is thought that the Ferrari was spared from use in competition and was more enjoyed for its grand touring, lusso qualities. Indeed, he seemingly drove the Berlinetta to various club events, as it was photographed at the Prescott Hill Climb campsite in the mid-1970s keeping company with a Morris Marina and a couple of caravans.

Chassis number 5461 would then pass to Ferrari Owners’ Club GB member J T Panks, Major Yates, and later Mr Reg A Parker of Warwickshire. After a spell with Modena Engineering director Mr Richard Bond in Devon, the Berlinetta Lusso was owned by Mr John Fazackerly before joining the stable of famed collector Sir Anthony Bamford. In 1984 it was purchased by GT racing driver Mr William Tuckett, and is believed to have been changed to red by this point.

The consigning owner, a serial collector and another accomplished single-seater and sportscar driver, bought the 250 GT/L from their friend Mr Tuckett in 1991. The Ferrari was subsequently treated to an engine and gearbox rebuild plus a suspension refresh by DK Engineering in 2004 (invoices available to view on file). It would also take part in the five-day Italia Classic Ferrari Gran Tour between Maranello and Venice in September 2011. Further notable maintenance includes Omega Motorsport of Buckingham overhauling the braking system in March 2021.

Significantly, in recognition of retaining its matching-numbers 3-litre engine by Colombo, the car was awarded Ferrari Classiche certification in July 2011. Accordingly, the Berlinetta Lusso is accompanied by its coveted “Red Book” in addition to a history report compiled by marque authority Marcel Massini, tool roll, and spare Borrani wire wheel.

Presented in Rosso Chiaro over Nera leather and boasting Ferrari Classiche certification, this Berlinetta Lusso has won the hearts of a series of marque enthusiasts and keen racing drivers during its fascinating lifetime. The most recent, the vendor, has cherished it for some 34 years.

As for the next owner, whether or not they return the 250 GT/L to its factory colour scheme, they are sure to be welcomed at any number of Italian classic car events and tours in the United Kingdom and around the world.
