1960 | Aston Martin DB 4

Manufactured between October 1958 and June 1963, the Aston Martin DB4 developed no fewer than five series. However, it should be made clear that the cars were not thus designated by the factory, this nomenclature having been suggested subsequently by the Aston Martin Owners Club to aid identification as the model evolved. The first series had already undergone a number of improvements including the fitting of heavy-duty bumpers after the first 50 cars, before the second series arrived in January 1960. A front-hinged bonnet, larger brake calipers and an enlarged sump were the major changes made on the Series II while the third series featured separate rear lights, two bonnet stays and a host of improvements to the interior fittings. Manufactured between September 1961 and October 1962, the fourth series was readily distinguishable by its shallower bonnet intake, recessed rear lights and new grille with seven vertical bars. The final, fifth series was built on a 3.5 inch longer wheelbase (allowing for increased legroom and a larger boot) and gained 15" wheels, an electric radiator fan and the DB4GT-type instrument panel. "The Aston Martin DB4 was perhaps the finest compromise which the David Brown-owned company ever achieved between exceptionally high-quality, exceptionally high-performance, exceptionally lavish finishing and yet properly contained overall size and weight - a great British product, benefiting from the styling input of Touring of Milan" - Motors, 1965.

According to its accompanying copy Aston Martin Ltd (AML) Build Sheet and Service Records, this particular Series II example - chassis number DB4/415/R - was supplied new via Raymond Mays to Rowland Hunt Esq. of Aswardby Hall, Spilsby on November 11th 1960. Acquired by watchmaker Bentima Co Ltd of 168 Old St, EC1 the following April, a copy continuation logbook on file shows that ownership later transferred to James Mario Elliot of Carlisle Place, SW1, Brenda Diane Making, Anthony Elliott and C. Benge. The same document also reveals that the DB4 was upgraded with a later series powerplant during the 1960s (engine number 370/894 supplanting 370/487). Early DB4 engines were prone to failure hence the reason that Aston Martin added an oil cooler to its specification as the model evolved. Part of a private European collection from the late 1980s through till 2014 when it entered the current custodianship via the Landmark Car Co Ltd, chassis DB4/415/R has since been substantially improved.

Treated to a 'top-end' engine overhaul including a replacement big valve cylinder head at a cost of some £9,411.47, the four-seater was subsequently despatched to marque specialist Chicane Classics for over £30,000 worth of attention to its steering, brakes, front/rear suspension, exhaust and tyres etc. Cosmetically enhanced via a respray in California Sage Metallic, the Aston Martin is reported to run and drive well by the vendor who has enjoyed using the car for regular weekends aways in the Cotswolds. More recently maintained by Aston Martin specialists Nicholas Mee, the car has been maintained to the highest of standards. Trimmed in Black leather as per its build specification and reunited with its original registration number 'SCT 415', this rare Aston Martin DB4 Series II is offered for sale with UK V5C Registration Document, copy build record, copy continuation logbook and numerous restoration bills / invoices.

Supplied with a V5C registration document, bound history file including bill and invoices for restoration works as well as recent maintenance from Nicholas Mee. Having sold at auction ten years ago for just over £433,000, this beautiful DB4 offers the opportunity to acquire one of the most beautiful British sports cars ever penned at significantly less outlay despite having only ever having had light use since.
