This is one of two motorcycles we have taken in part-exchange against a pre-war car. The delightful Sunbeam was an interesting stablemate of the shaft-driven BMW R25 we have also offered for sale.
Derived from the S7 which was designed by Erling Poppe, the S8's styling was loosely based on BMW's R75 designs which were acquired as part of war reparations by UK motorcycle manufacturer BSA. They owned rights to the Sunbeam brand which had been acquired from AMC in 1943. The engine is an all-aluminium in-line two cylinder 487cc overhead cam unit with a wet sump, car-like gearbox and shaft drive to the rear wheel. This was a bike which looked like no other and was designed as a ‘sporting' model with a clamed top speed of 85mph. The S8 power unit is widely regarded as one of the best-looking British motorcycle engines ever built.
Having had little use in the past few years this imposing classic Sunbeam is now being recommissioned in readiness for its new owner.
