The original Jaguar C-Type won the Le Mans 24 hour race on its debut in 1951 and then repeated this victory again in 1953, thus cementing the car as one of the great designs in racing history. As well as being a hugely successful racing car it was also utterly beautiful in its lightweight, aerodynamic aluminium body. Just 52 examples were built by the factory so scarcity and price have made them a favourite for recreations however not all of these homages are built equal.  Numerous companies now try to imitate these 50s icons and one of the first and many would argue the best was Bryan Wingfield who made 4 recreations in the late 1970s and early 80s.  Each of the 4 cars he built was specifically tailored to the owners who were Anthony Lumsden-Cook, Paul Hewes, Henry Taylor and Sir Anthony Bamford.

The Bryan Wingfield built Jaguar C-Type that we offer here was commissioned in the late 1970s by Mr Anthony Lumsden-Cook .  This was the first C-type recreation built by Brian and it was finished to his exacting standards from largely C-Type parts using a 3442cc XK engine with triple Webers and correct breathers from the ‘C’ type head.  The engine is married to a XK Moss gearbox with live back axle and torsion-bar front suspension. Dunlop disc brakes are fitted all round.  The body is all aluminium and the interior and exterior are exceptionally close to the Ecurie Ecosse team’s C-Type in every way.

Mr Lumsden-Cook sold the car through UK dealers DK Engineering, in 1982 at which time it was acquired by Merrick Taylor. Merrick kept the car many years, attending a large number of rallies and events including the Mille Miglia in 1995 where is finished having had no problems and the C-Type reunions at Le Mans. The car has been driven by numerous drives at these events including Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham and Roy Salvadori to name a few and the history file of the car contains various pictures of these drivers at the wheel.

The Jaguar C-type has also done some more serious racing as well as the rallies and tours. The car was raced on and off through the 1980s and early 90s at Silverstone, Donington and Oulton Park and it also competed in Hillclimbs at Prescott and Shelsley Walsh where it won the classic car class in 1986.  It was only on Merrick’s passing that the car became available for sale, a sale we conducted in 2013.  The current custodian of this lovely motor has enjoyed many happy years of ownership and it is again with his sad and untimely death that the car is once again on the market.

It is no surprise to anyone who has seen or driven this motorcar that it has had only 3 owners in the past 40 years since it was converted to its current C-type guise. The quality of Bryan’s work is exceptional and this car both looks and drives superbly. The car benefits from not being continually resprayed and mollycoddled whenever there is a small blemish so the car oozes patina and in fact looks a lot more genuine than a lot of the restored real cars.

The car comes with its current V5C and a wonderful history file covering the ownership of the car from 1982 when Merrick bought the car. This contains a huge number of invoices, letters, its old FIVA identity card, articles and photographs showing how well the car was looked after and cared for.

This Jaguar C-type is for someone who would like a recreation that is a cut above the rest on the market and has proven reliability and performance. Please call for more details and to arrange a viewing.
