In the fifties, Triumph launched its first sports car, the Triumph TR2. The TR designation – short for Triumph Roadster – was solely used for the British brand’s sports cars.
The TR4 was introduced in 1961. This completely redesigned sports car looked very different from its predecessor – the TR3. The new and larger coachwork with proper wind-down windows (in place of side curtains), increased displacement, a synchronised gearbox and larger boot were just a few of the notable improvements. In later years, the track front and rear were also widened, and the car’s road-holding heightened.
The emphasis for the TR4 clearly shifted to designing a more user-friendly car, with a completely new interior and dashboard, in combination with higher driving dynamics compared with its memorable predecessor. This car did not just look more modern, it belonged to a new generation.
