Or what was it actually like in those days?
In 1953, Mercedes-Benz presented the first real new construction after the war in the Ponton series – which was a real sensation back then! With an integral body and new kinds of safety elements such as crumple zones and safety steering columns it is a milestone in automotive manufacturing. As the luxury class model of the series, the new 220 series followed in 1954 with an extended undercarriage, which was 23 centimetres longer than the W 187 predecessor series. From 1956, Mercedes-Benz also once again offered elegant coupe and cabriolet versions in this series. The cabriolet structure without roof bars represented a special challenge for the constructors and production in terms of the integral body and made an extra strip of floor pan necessary in order to avoid distortions. The exclusive small series were produced by hand and were characterised by a high processing quality. Thanks to the Ponton series, after the war Mercedes was able to once again position itself as a manufacturer of particularly high-quality vehicles. The basic price of the cabriolet was, at DM 23,400, almost double that of the price of the saloon at DM 12,500 due to the costly production. Only 1,112 units of the 220 SE Cabriolet with the prestigious injection engine were ever produced.
Or how it really is. Original, given a facelift or fully restored?
The vehicle has very recently been restored to the highest technical and visual level by specialists and the work was documented with photos. The vehicle has not yet been driven since. All gaps are flawless and the entire technology works impeccably. The current condition is of a higher quality than at the time the vehicles were delivered thanks to today‘s better materials.
Or what is it like to drive?
As an elevated class of vehicle from the 1950s, it can still be used for comfortable travelling and pleasurable journeys today without any difficulty. The results of a shopping spree disappear into the spacious boot just as effortlessly as extensive travel luggage. Thanks to its mass production technology the cabriolet is reliable and easy to maintain. It draws maximum attention to itself on drives and at events with its colour combination of grey with the matched grey interior equipment, the refined root wood applications and the dark soft top. A dream cabriolet that draws a lot of attention to itself and that, in this fabulous condition, will offer its owner many decades of pleasure when driving and at events. It is very much an attractive investment that still has increase potential.
