For Sale: Stylish, elegant and incredibly comfortable, this is a superb, low-mileage example of Mercedes’ remarkable Pullman.
Introduced in 1963, the Mercedes 600 (W100) range of ultra-luxurious saloon cars were effectively forerunners of the modern Maybach. The ‘flagship’ of the 600 range was undoubtedly the long-wheelbase, four-door "Pullman" limousine, with two additional rear-facing seats separated from the driver's compartment by a powered dividing window. 429 of these substantial motor cars were built when production ended in1983, 304 with a divider and vis-à-vis seating as we have in the superb example on offer here.
As well as offering a level of luxury only rivalled by established coachbuilders, Mercedes’ engineers were given a free hand and the 600 represented state-of-the-art automotive engineering of the period in just about every department, featuring four-speed automatic transmission, all-round disc brakes, power-assisted steering, central locking, separate air conditioning systems for the front and rear compartments, and insulated glass all round. The Pullman’s size, weight, and numerous hydraulically driven amenities required more power than Mercedes' largest engine at that time could produce, so a new V8 with more than twice the capacity, the 6.3-litre M100, was designed and developed. Featuring single overhead camshafts and Bosch mechanical fuel-injection, the new power unit produced around 250bhp, serenely whisking the car’s occupants up to 60mph in less than 10 seconds and on to 125 mph, perfectly respectable now and absolutely remarkable fifty years ago.
One of the most notable features of these models is the sophisticated 150-Bar (2,176 psi) hydraulic pressure system which operates the multi-way adjustable seating, windows, central locking, sunroof, glass partition and the adjustable air suspension which offers class-leading ride quality and sure-footed handling over any road surface.
Dating from 1971, this superb, left-hand drive example is finished in Raven Black with a light tan leather interior and has covered an indicated 29,571 miles. It was fitted from new with the optional rear-facing seats and powered partition which allows for additional privacy when the car is being chauffeur-driven or can be left open when Dad is taking the family out to lunch. In between the rear-facing seats is a refrigerated cocktail cabinet finished in a Rosewood Veneer and internally fitted to ensure the contents don’t rattle. Figured Rosewood features strongly throughout the car’s interior which has benefited from being completely retrimmed in original materials and is a truly delightful place to be.
In fact, the whole car has enjoyed significant investment over the years, with the body being completely repainted and all of the chrome and brightwork refurbished. The elegant coachwork displays factory standard shut-lines, the Raven Black paintwork retains a deep shine and overall this is a superbly presented example of a much sought-after model.
Obviously not day-to-day transport, this imposing Pullman is designed to make a statement and, if such a vehicle is on your shopping list, you will struggle to find a better example. Come along to our showroom, sit in the car and see for yourself.
