The Land Rover project idea had been Maurice Wilks from finding out how useful his old Wartime Jeep was at light farming and small jobs about the place. Wilks had found the Jeep particularly useful during the hard winter of 1947 but also great on the Red Wharf Bay beach in Anglesey, where the Wilks family had a holiday home.
The idea for the Land Rover as a vehicle for Rover to manufacture was first thought up at Anglesey. The British Government was bringing in some strict rationing for steel supply for car companies unless they concentrated very strongly on export. The Land Rover had huge export potential for Rover, so the engineering programme developed quickly. A team was made up of Engineers to get the ‘Land Rover’ project going. Overall Maurice Wilks was the technical director and Robert Boyle was chief engineer at Rover. Arthur Goddard was the development engineer and put in charge of the overall Land Rover test and development programme in 1947. Through the late 40s and early 50s, Goddard was in charge of a fleet of development vehicles that lead to the development of Land Rover Defender range today.
1948 the newly designed Rover was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show on 30 April. Later known as the ‘Series I’, it has an 80in wheelbase, 50bhp 1595cc petrol engine from the Rover P3, pick-up body and priced £450. Later that year Rover introduced the first Land Rover Station Wagon in December 1948. However, it was expensive due to attracting purchase tax and only 641 were built, mainly for export.
1949: Within a year, production totals 8000 and the British Army orders its first trial batch of Land Rovers. 1950s: Royal Relationship begins and Series ll Launch.1966 500,000 Rovers had been built and by 1976 the milestone had been hit with 1,000,000 cars manufactured within 29 years.
Fast forward to 1990 and the Land Rover was renamed the Ninety and One-Ten range Defender 90, 110 and 130.
2007 A major Defender evolution includes the replacement of the Td5 with the 122bhp Puma/DuraTorq TDCI four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, the addition of a six-speed gearbox, a more modern dashboard and safer, forward-facing rear seats in the Station Wagon. A new Utility body becomes available.
2015: The Year of the Defender with the announcement production will finish at the end of the year, the little Rover was celebrated by a number of events, including a 1 km wide sand drawing of the original Land Rover shape on the beach at Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey where it all had started. After a continuous run of 67 years production finally ended on 29 January 2016 when the last Land Rover Defender, with the number plate H166 HUE, rolled off the production line.
