The Ford Escort Mk.II was introduced in January 1975 and had a more "boxy" design than its predecessor.
Unlike the Escort Mk.I, 100% developed by Ford UK, the Mk II was developed together in a close collaboration between Ford UK and Ford Germany. With the code name «Brenda», it was developed using basically the same mechanical components as the Mk.I.
There was some criticism at the launch date due to the rear suspension still using leaf springs, although some competitors like the Hillman Avenger have already adopted spiral springs. However, none of the critical points pointed to Escort Mk.II prevented the model from becoming one of Ford's best-selling European models.
Like the Escort Mk.I, the Mk.II had a successful career in rallies and track racing, with its «RS» versions - the RS1800 in the Gr.4 rally class and the RS2000 in the Gr.1 in rallies and track racing - being today one of most popular and desired classic rally and race car.
