The Development of the Ferrari Mondial
Ferrari Mondial took over from Ferrari GT4, which was a mid-engine V8 with a Bertone style. The Ferrari Mondial went through significant changes throughout its production period: Mondial 8, QV, 3.2 and T. The last three models had two body variations: cabriolet and coupe.
In 1980 to 1982, the company produced the Mondial V8 with the aim of serving as a touring car vehicle. The model had a 2+2 coupe body style and 3.0 L Tipo F106B F1 V8 among other features. However, the model received lots of criticisms from Ferrari enthusiasts and the public mainly due to its weak engine.
The company embarked on the production of Mondial Quattrovalvole (MQ) in 1982 to counter the negative feedback from its previous model. The company upgraded the engine with a new four-valve head. The MQ received better feedback from the public and automotive press, unlike the previous model.
Three years later, the Mondial 3.2 arrived on the market with even more incredible features. Its engine had grown considerably in power (3.2L TipoF105C 4v V8) and had a reliable and approachable maintenance. The model received a lot of positive reviews.
The production of the final model, the Mondial T, commenced in 1989 through to 1993. The model had significant changes from the previous models. It had a 300-hp engine, different layout of the powertrain, styling, and interior ergonomics. Despite the model’s high cost of maintenance, some still considered the model as the best in the market.
Unique Aspects of Ferrari Mondial
The vast space and practical nature of Ferrari Mondial set it apart from other Ferraris. The model has a higher roof, longer doors, high visibility and four seats with enough leg room. Even with these unique features, the Ferrari Mondial still maintains the exceptional performance levels attributed to the Ferraris.
Another distinctive feature is its incredible layout. As opposed to the previous Ferraris, the main components of Ferrari Mondial such as the gearbox, suspension, and engine unit are removable. Also, the components are connected to the subframe making it easier to rebuild. Further, the Ferrari Mondial went through a gear change from the standard H shift to a reverse h-gate pattern. Therefore, ensuring an effective gear change.
