Description
Connaught first appeared after the 2nd World war along with other British companies including BRM, HWM, Cooper, Lotus, etc. Based at Send in Surrey they started by making Lea-Francis based sportscars and progressed onto Formula 2 single seater race cars. The brains behind Connaught were Rodney Clarke and Mike Oliver, the finances coming from Kenneth McAlpine. The B-Type Formula 1 cars were first seen in 1955 powered by a 2.5ltr Alta twin overhead camshaft engine, on a ladder frame with wishbones and coils at the front and de Dion rear axle. The most memorable victory for Connaught in a B-Type was when Tony Brooks won at Syracuse in 1955. Chassis B5 achieving two podiums in the 1956 season, taking 2nd at Bands Hatch driven by Stuart Lewis Evans and a 3rd place podium at Pau Grand Prix France driven by Ivor Bueb.
