When the Second World War ended, the dream of "pent-up demand" for car manufacturers came true. Buick was in a particularly good position, having redesigned much of its product line for 1942, and these cars were lightly lifted and re-trimmed for the post-war boom.
The pre-war Century and Limited lines were gone, but the 124-inch wheelbase, mid-range Super returned with four models: two-door sedanets and convertibles, and four-door sedans and woody station wagons. With average prices around $2,000, Supers accounted for more than 75% of Buick's 1946 production, with the sedan being the most popular body style.
The Buick Super was well appointed, with floor mats, a clock, rear wing trim and woodgrain trim, and firm seats. The Super was also as big as the Roadmaster, which appealed to buyers, although it had a shorter bonnet and only the 110hp 248cid in-line engine, which it also shared with the Special. The Roadmaster, on the other hand, had the 144 hp 320-cid eight-cylinder. Demand for new cars was still high, and so little was changed on the Buick Super in 1947 and 1948, except for a nicer grille.
Post-war Buicks remain a practical and handsome example of 1940s curvaceous styling. They are roomy and comfortable, albeit with a rather soft ride. Production was high and many parts were shared across the board, making ownership relatively easy. And while the Super isn't the first post-war Buick that comes to mind for most enthusiasts, the sedans and sedanets are particularly affordable and representative of 1940s American carmaking.
This 56 S Sedanet was built in 1946 and delivered in Verde Green with grey striped Broadcloth. A few years ago it received a light restoration with a new paint job. The paint is in good condition. The primer is quite thin, which is why the paint thickness measurement shows good values.
All emblems and trim are present and in very good condition for its age.
The engine compartment looks immaculate. The bonnet can be opened to the left or right.
Technically, everything has been left in original condition, including the 6 volt electrics.
Inside, everything has been reupholstered in classic timeless grey fabric not too long ago. The headliner is also made of light brown fabric. Everything in very good condition.
The full-length bench seat in the front makes it possible for 6 people to share in the driving fun.
