Bentley Mark V Classic Cars for Sale

The Bentley Mark V was the last model destined to be built at Derby and was supplied as a chassis only, with owners choosing their own coach building options. Rolls Royce had the intention of introducing their second Bentley to the public in 1939. However, with the onset of war, the company stated that they would not be engaging in any further civilian projects. The Bentley Mark V was produced from 1939 – 1941

Bentley Mark V - Engine and Chassis

A new, 4 ¼ litre, six cylinder engine was designed for the Mark V with a side exiting exhaust valve and overhead inlet system. Modifications to it included design changes to the main and big end bearings, brought about by advancements in alloy technology. The assembly was mounted further forward to control vibration in the passenger compartment with the aim of increasing comfort and driveability. The chassis was a completely new design with modified side rails to minimise flex during higher speed cornering and driving, plus make space available for the development of an all new independent front suspension.

Bentley Mark V – Gearbox and Suspension

The Mark V was the first Bentley to sport synchromesh on all gears but reverse and first, making it easier to drive. This was further assisted by an improved clutch mechanism. There was also re-design of the transmission shaft, that was split to further reduce in-car vibration. The Bentley Mark V suspension system was also changed and had fully independent front suspension with a hydraulic damper set up. Anti-roll bars completed the new system. The braking system for the Bentley Mark V was supplied by Girling, with 57% of the braking effort being applied across the front wheels

Bentley Mark V production

In total, 35 Bentley Mark V chassis were produced, but only 17 cars reached completion, with the other chassis being scrapped. An experimental 'Corniche' was also on the drawing board which was more aerodynamic and lighter that the Bentley Mark V. However, World War Two stopped any further development and production of the Bentley Marque.
