1937 Derby Bentley 4.25 litre special.

A lovely Derby Special created some years ago but laid up for many years after under 3000 miles were covered. The current owner writes:

Historically I purchased the car not 5 miles from where I now live in 1991. The car was purchased in London by an American Naval Officer who toured Europe with It before putting it into storage In his mother's barn here in the States. When he retired some 15-20 years later he planned on restoring the Park Ward saloon himself and began dismantling it when he decided it was too much to handle. I bought it from him for about 10K pounds and shipped It to Peter Rae in Edinburgh who oversaw the rebuild. Tim Houlding and I designed the car to have
1. an unaltered 41/4 from the front
2. a 3 litre touring body from the cowl back
3. Blue train Speed Six Coupe wings and
4. VDP 41/4 Tourer cutaway doors

The late renowned expert Stuart Gordon did the mechanical restoration Including new water pipes In the block and got It running satisfactorily. Randal Stewart hammered out the aluminum metal body over his designed tubular frame. Peter Rae did the interior joining and arranged trimming and paint. In 1994 or 1995 we drove the car from Scotland to Dover and joined a BDC European Tour. We ran mostly with Michael Waterhouse and did seven Alpine passes In one day at incredible speed. His very fast 41/2 could not pull away except on the motorway when I dared not take the car past 3000RPM. You then took the car in and sorted odds and ends and Installed the overdrive for highway cruising. We did a couple more trips with the car in the UK with Michael and others. In total we did about 2000-3000 miles and stored the car in Michael's barn where it rested many years until he sold the property to his son and Ken picked up tending to It and storing it until he was forced to move to new quarters and you were kind enough to take it in for sale.
Since being put back on the road last year the car was found to be overheating. Noted Marque speciailst Ben Smitth took the car in & some £5,000 was spent in curing the overheating problem & re-commissioning the car so it now runs cool & drives beautifully. With its very very light body, this is an extremly fast car which when combined with overdrive allows to pass more modern cars with aplomb on fast A roads.
The car is finished in a dark red over black along with a black roof. To the interior are very comfortable black leather seats piped in red. Under the bonnet the car is tidy with an engine that starts readily & pulls very strongly. A full flow oil filter has been added to the car as has overdrive which makes it very very long legged. The body is light & well executed with pretty VDP style cut away doors. An assortment of recent correspondence & Ben Smiths bills come with the car along with old style buff & green log books.
The car is in fine order & is ready for immediate use on rallys or long distance events.
