The Amphicar (introduced as Eurocar) was the life's work of the car designer Hans Trippel (1908-2001), who was involved in making amphibious vehicles until an old age. The Amphicar 770 is the only amphibious car made in series, at least for private use. The body came from West Berlin, the engine from England and there were even parts from the then GDR. The car was assembled in West Berlin.

3,878 units were produced between 1961 and 1968.  The sale was disappointing, partly due to the high price of more than 10,000 Deutsche Mark. Also, the Amphicar was not a comfortable car and the performance was mediocre, with a top speed of 105 km / h on land and 12 km / h on the water. In the absence of a rudder, the front wheels 'just' had to be steered, so that the 'boat' was not very manoeuvrable. In addition, the car was not absolutely waterproof and a trip on the water required a lot of maintenance. Yet an Amphicar managed to cross the Channel in 1962.

One of the main investors died in 1967. And when US legislation was made tougher in 1968, the curtain fell.

The car was available in four colors. It had a modified Porsche gearbox and a Triumph engine. The Amphicar is still popular among old car enthusiasts.
