With the Giulia the GTI concept was invented by Alfa Romeo some 15 years before VW gave name to the concept. With the fine “Nord” engine in aluminum featuring double overhead camshafts, 2 double Weber carburetors, disc brakes all around and a 5 speed gearbox, the Giulia was in fact a sports car dressed up like a 4 door sedan. A real Q car. During the sixties the model was in demand by the new Italian middle class and it could easily transport the whole family from Milan or Turin to the Lido carrying a march speed north of 160 kph. The fact that the model was also the preferred vehicle for all that smelled of policing, such as Carabinieri, Polizia and Guardia de Finanza makes the story even better – surely we all remember to have watched one or two Italian movies where the model played a major part.
This example was Danish from the very beginning and still retains its original Danish black license plates – which is extraordinary seldom. It is a 1600 version (the vast majority of Giulia’s were delivered as 1300) and showing the familiar body details inspired by Professor Kamm, which improved the drag coefficient of the car. Who would believe that a Giulia has a Cw of just 0.34? In comparison it is actually better than a Porsche 911. Futhermore the car was delivered in the absolutely cool color Alfa Rosso, which makes the car even more attractive.
We know the full story of the car, which was totally restored by ourselves a couple of years ago, of course with full photographic documentation. The work took more than a year and included a total restoration of body, engine, undercarriage and interior, which is now wearing thick delicious leather. This is the only dtail where the car differs from when originally delivered – they were always produced with vinyl or cloth but we think this is a nice upgrade.
The car has been featured in several magazines among other “Motor Classic” and the magazine of the Danish Alfa Romeo club and is as such regarded as an important part of the Danish Alfa Romeo history. It is a very reliable classic car, that can be enjoyed as well as used. And with increasing demand on the international market might also be a good investment.
