Descrizione

The 300 SEL 6.3 was the original wolf in sheep’s clothing Q car and this is probably one of the finest examples of this now legendary model having undergone a complete detailed restoration to factory standards, which cost in excess of £220,000.

A UK supplied right hand drive example, this 6.3 was supplied when new by Mercedes Benz Great West Road, London in February 1970. It was ordered to a high specification, all of which it retains to this day, with metallic blue paintwork, grey original leather interior, electric sunroof, air conditioning, Becker stereo and Hirschmann aerial. This is all confirmed in documentation on file.

In 1979 this Mercedes was purchased by an enthusiast who had a long-term infatuation with the 300 SEL model type, indeed there is a copy of The Times newspaper from February 14th 1967 on file in which this then new model was announced. He had been chauffeured to his wedding the previous year in the car by the previous owner, a good friend. Following purchase, the car was used infrequently for a short period before being placed in long term storage as work commitments abroad took over, and there it remained until 2008. 

In 2008 it was decided that something really had to be done with the Mercedes, the owner giving himself the options of selling it as is or embarking on a perfect restoration. Fortunately for the car, he chose the latter route and hence began the next exciting chapter in this 6.3’s history. 

To all intents and purposes, the car still presented well albeit with an expected level of all round shabbiness. The owner, a meticulous individual with a great eye for detail had the car fully inspected and a fully detailed restoration programme was formed. Much research went into which specialists to use for the different elements of the work required and finally the very best people for this particular model were identified and commissioned. Two large history files fully detail the work completed in copious invoicing, correspondence and pictures. In addition, the restoration was extensively featured in articles in the Mercedes Benz Owners Gazette over several issues, all are on file. We have seen many great comprehensively restored cars at Hairpin but the level of detail in the work here is on a different level. It was after all a beautifully made and complicated car when new but the amount of research and work just to perfectly restore the central locking system to as new, for example, is simply mind boggling. 

The restoration was completed in 2018 following final testing and snagging and it has covered less than 2,000 careful miles since, whilst being carefully stored in a dry heated garage at all other times. 

The car remains in superb order in all respects and it drives beautifully with a solidity and tautness one has come to expect from Mercedes in this period. It remains a very quick point to point car even amongst accomplished modern machinery, it’s easy to see why it was the must have car for the motoring elite when new, and it certainly delivers on the legend.

Retained by a besotted owner from 1979 until earlier this year, this unique 6.3 comes with two extensive files as referred to above, detailing the cars history and full restoration. A special car and a rare opportunity.
