Post-war Europe was hungry for more than just cars; Ferry Porsche was on a mission to build something that made driving come alive, a machine infused with soul. Enter the Porsche 356: a lightweight, rear-engine masterpiece that perfectly blended precision and passion.

By 1961, the 356 had blossomed into the B 1600 Super, the very essence of Porsche’s early philosophy. Its 1.6-liter flat-four engine delivered a modest but thrilling 75 horsepower, perfectly balancing simplicity and performance. Quick, nimble, and deeply connected to the road, the 1600 Super was the bridge between Porsche’s racing pedigree and the legendary 911 that would soon follow. It remains a timeless icon of mechanical emotion and pure driving pleasure.

This 1961 Porsche 356 B 1600 Super Roadster, chassis 88724, is a rare gem in every sense. Built for the U.S. market and bodied by Karosseriewerke Drauz, not Reutter like most, it is one of only 800 Drauz-bodied Roadsters ever produced. Combine that with the more powerful 1600 Super engine and you are looking at one of the most desirable open-top 356s in existence.

The car retains approximately 80% of its original Aetna Blue paint, one of the rarest and most charming colors ever offered on a 356. The finish has aged with grace, showing soft fading and gentle patina that no restoration can ever replicate. In a world full of over-restored garage queens, this car stands out for its honesty and integrity. Inside, the story continues. Reclining leather seats, original switchgear, a beautifully aged steering wheel and clean gauges all reflect decades of careful use. It feels authentic, untouched by time, and far more interesting than something freshly redone.

Mechanically, it is spot on. The flat-four engine starts eagerly and pulls with smooth, linear strength. The gearbox is precise, the handling light and communicative, the drive experience pure and rewarding. You feel every corner, every gearshift, every heartbeat of the car. This is what real driving feels like.

This isn’t a showpiece frozen in time. It is a well-preserved survivor with rare factory specification, proper documentation, and that one element you can never recreate once it is gone: originality. For collectors who value character over cosmetics and soul over shine, this is the one. Available now at RNR Classics.
