Descripción

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class or G-Wagon, short for Gelandewagen (cross-country vehicle), is characterised by its boxy styling and body-on-frame construction. It uses three fully locking differentials, one of the few vehicles to have such a feature. The G-Class is still in production and is one of the longest produced Mercedes-Benz vehicles in their history with a span of 32 years. It was developed as a military vehicle from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran and offered as a civilian version in 1979. The first major refinements were introduced in 1981, including an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an auxiliary fuel tank, protective headlamp grilles and a cable winch. Fuel injection became available in 1982 when the 230 GE was introduced in Turin, along with more comfortable and supportive front seats, auxiliary heating, wider tyres and wheel arches. For 1985, differential locks, central door locking and a tachometer became standard.

Finished in Astral Silver metallic with iconic plaid cloth interior, this long wheelbase 1989 Mercedes-Benz 280 GE is arguably one of the finest, most original examples of the legendary 'Gelandewagen' available. UK-supplied from new, we are informed it has been maintained to the highest standard with no expense spared. It rides on original 15-inch five-spoke wheels fitted with new Continental CrossContact ATR tyres. The underside is remarkably clean and well-preserved for a classic off roader, having received the same level of attention and care as the body and mechanicals. Under the bonnet sits the dependable 2.7 litre, naturally aspirated, inline-six, delivering approximately 156bhp. Power is sent to all four wheels via a smooth four-speed automatic transmission, complete with locking differentials and selectable high and low range and ensuring true off-road capability.

The interior is in superb condition, the plaid cloth seats remain taut with no sagging or damage, and the piping is intact throughout. The headlining and original carpeting are equally well preserved, with minimal signs of use. Over the last four years, this 280 GE has benefitted from circa £40,000 in specialist maintenance and enhancements including replacement of the twin long range fuel tanks, carried out by renowned Mercedes-Benz experts Stevensons in the Southeast. Among the highlights is a bespoke stainless-steel exhaust, fabricated to the exact specification of the original Mercedes-Benz system. Offered complete with its original books and manuals, a well-documented service history file and has spent time as part of a private Mercedes-Benz collection and museum display. This is one of the best preserved and maintained examples money can buy and viewing is highly recommended. Consigned by Mathew Priddy.
