Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2024 – The highlight of historic motorsport

Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2024 (14)

For many, the annual Formula 1 race in Monaco is the pinnacle of automobile racing. The great spectacle for all the senses, however, is the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique.

100 years and highlights of motorsport were presented at this year’s 14th Historic Grand Prix of Monaco. The event was launched in 1997 to mark the 700th birthday of the Grimaldi royal family.

In an industry that is currently struggling to find a direction for its future, between electric, hydrogen or hybrid drives – this is a tribute to the past in its purest form of motorsport.

This tricky 3.3 kilometer route is known for being narrow and full of elevation changes and crests. It is a challenge to make up places. Current F1 cars may be too big and too fast for this track. It seems that the old, analogue and harder-to-handle cars fit here better.

The event began on the first day with the participants being welcomed in the paddock. In the open paddock, mind you, because on this day everyone has the opportunity to walk freely between the cars, talk to the drivers and mechanics and enjoy the racing atmosphere.

And the lineup of cars is an impressive collection of historically relevant cars. Such as one of only two surviving Alfa Romeo 8C Monza SF28s from Tazio Nuvolari’s Scuderia Ferrari to several Bugatti Type 35s, BRM P57s and the Lotus 3L F1 monsters.

Nowhere else can you experience a weekend full of racing and motorsport history like in Monaco. This venue has no Garage Queens: even pre-war racing cars are pushed to their limits and revive their glorious old days.

A tribute to Ayrton Senna at the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2024

This year’s Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2024 was also a tribute to Ayrton Senna, thirty years after the Brazilian Formula 1 world champion’s tragic death. The parade took place on Saturday and showcased his career over the years: starting with
his kart, past his Van Diemen RF82 Ford 2000, RALT RT3 83 F3, F1 Lotus 07T and his legendary McLaren Honda MP4/5B-07. Fellow racing drivers and family members such as Bruno Senna and Thierry Boutsen demonstrated the vehicles for a few laps in his memory.

For me it is the second historic GP in Monaco in a row. And it was another special experience. It’s like traveling through time in the paddock and having the feeling that these cars transcend time.

The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique only takes place every two years, so you better mark May 2026 in your calendar, it’s an event that you shouldn’t miss as a motorsport fan.
