Classic Trader How To: Perfect Ads

You have invested a lot of time and effort in your classic vehicle. You polished and nursed it to make sure it looks like an absolute gem! To make sure interested buyers recognize the time and effort you put into presenting your classic there are some tips that you should take into account when preparing the advertisement.

The following guide should help you to create the optimal advertisement. The topics following will be dealt with in detail: vehicle data, images, ad text as well as condition and certificates.

So let’s get started!

Step 1: vehicle data

Create new ad
Click on “My account” at the top right of the screen and select “Create a new listing” from the drop-down menu (1). The interface for creating the advertisement will open.Make and ModelStart with the selection of the vehicle type (2) as well as the make, year of construction and model. The example is for a 1950 Jaguar XK 120 OTS. Enter the make as a free text or select from the dropdown menu (3). While you are making entries, the Classic Trader database calculates all possible options and enters the correct data in the appropriate fields. Fields are only filled out automatically by the Classic Trader database (4) – if there is only one correct possible entry – otherwise fields have to be filled out by hand.

Make and Model Details

The Classic Trader database contains virtually all vehicle makes, models and their various specifications in combination with their year of manufacture. Even while you are entering your vehicle’s data, this database automatically begins to calculate which vehicle it is likely to be and completes the fields that are still open. This ensures no incorrect information is entered and, generally, speeds up the creation of an advertisement. When all fields are filled out click on “Continue” (5). It is possible that your vehicle is part of a special series and not in our database. In these cases, please click on “your vehicle is not available?” (6). A new input screen appears and you can specify your vehicle manually (see note).

In this particular mode you can also specify values that differ from the standard ones, such as an enhanced performance for example*. After you have finished entering the data and confirm by clicking “Continue”, the details you provided will be checked by our employees and entered into our database. At the same time you can continue creating your ad.

Specific vehicle data

Now the actual ad creation starts, divided into a few quick steps. It’s important that the information you provide about your vehicle is as complete and accurate as possible. Advertisements containing a lot of information are more appealing to potential buyers. The probability of selling a vehicle actually increases with the level of detail you provide. You can also enter further individual changes and technical details concerning your vehicle in the following. Select a subtitle (7) that shows a buyer the most important aspects of the vehicle in one glance. Under “Enter vehicle data” (8) add the details of your vehicle. Specify Power (bhp), Cubic capacitySeries, Steering, Cylinders and data on special conversions. If possible, indicate whether your vehicle is a Racing car, Conversion/Special or Recreation (9).

Interior Exterior Materials

After that comes the individual configuration such as: exterior colour, interior colour and material (10) as well as various other options such as folding roof, cruise control, air conditioning or airbags (11) etc. You can specify a vehicle price and location (12) to encourage potential buyers to contact you. As soon as you have completed filling out all the information, complete the first step by clicking on “Continue”.


Step 2: pictures

Pictures are extremely important when it comes to the quality of an advertisement. Images and their quality have a decisive influence on buying behavior.

It is especially important to select a sufficient number of images, in good quality and with an appealing image structure. In addition, you should make sure to take pictures of the vehicle from different angles so that the prospective buyer gets a comprehensive overview of the vehicle and its condition.

Image quantity: We encourage you to use the offered maximum of 50 images.

Image quality: Make sure that the vehicle is in the center of the image and that there is enough space around the edges of the image. Make sure that the vehicle is “sharp” or focused. The right resolution is also important. A resolution of around 1200 × 900 is recommended so that details can be easily recognized.

Image structure: An advertisement stands out by being special in one way or another. Since a potential buyer is first confronted with the centrally placed images of the vehicle and these dominate the display, it is advisable to choose interesting backgrounds while photographing your vehicle. Instead of a garage door, it is better to have the vehicle in front of a mountain view, fields or forests – or place it in front of a special building. Just let your creativity run wild!Images

To upload vehicle pictures, click “Select pictures” (13) and select at least four. As mentioned before, it is better to upload the stated maximum of 50 pictures.


The selected files are now listed. With “Upload now” (14) you add the images as blank files to the advertisement. The loading process can take a short while. The progress of the loading process is shown in percentage * and with the help of a loading bar *, both for the individual files and to the overall process.


After the initial upload, the images are shown in a thumbnail view and ready for final editing. Select one of the photographs as the cover picture (15). Drag and drop the remaining pictures by keeping the left mouse button pressed in an order that suits you. The pen icon (16) takes you to a menu that provides several editing options:

The images can be cropped into another format, be rotated left or right or be enlarged or reduced (17). Once you have edited the image as required, click on “Save” (18).

Give the photos a caption * in the line provided below the respective image. If necessary, you can use the button “Delete all images” *² to remove all files and start anew. By checking the boxes (top right in the respective picture) you can also select specific pictures and remove them by clicking “Delete selected pictures” *².Upload videoYou can add a video to the advertisement provided it has already been uploaded to a platform such as YouTube or Vimeo. To do this, enter the link * under Embed video in the intended address line and click the “Apply” button (19). A preview of the video will appear immediately below the link.


If your vehicle has been restored at some point, you can upload an additional 30 pictures in the “Restoration in pictures” section that show the restoration process. In case your vehicle shows damages or has some special features, you can upload 20 additional pictures under “Special features & damages”. These process of uploading the pictures remains the same throughout.

When all images have been processed and placed in the correct order, click “Continue” at the bottom of the page. The image selection has now been completed.


Step 3: ad text

The pictures are in place. The only thing missing now is a text that describes aspects of your vehicle that are not visible in the images. These may be features that make it unique and valuable or convey its history. The aim of this description is to advertise the vehicle through an interesting and balanced mix of general information, special details and – if possible – parts of its unique history. The text however, should not be unnecessarily long.

General information: Provide information about the interior, exterior, engine, transmission etc. Anticipate potential buyer’s questions and provide detail accordingly.

Special details: Increase the interest of potential buyers with a good and detailed description. Review the range in general and discuss what may set your vehicle apart from similar models. Specify any modifications.

Specific background: tell the story of your vehicle. Have there been prominent previous owners or anything else that sets it apart?

Discribe the vehicle

In the section “Describe the vehicle” (20) you have 15,000 characters to your disposal to highlight the aforementioned three points. Make use of the various editing options that are provided, such as italics, enumeration or bold print. With these you can draw attention to certain sections in your text or emphasize specific points.

Special equipment

Under “Special equipment and accessories” you can specify parts that come with the car. This may for instance be tools *, a hardtop * or a set of tyres. These parts should be included in the purchase price. Specify one part per line. You can add or remove lines by clicking the “-” button (21) or the “+” button (22). After you have confirmed that all information is correct, click on “Continue”.


Step 4: condition / certificates

To gain the trust of any potential buyer and give a maximum level of transparency, a comprehensive status classification of your vehicle is helpful. The next step in the advertising offers you the opportunity to categorize the vehicle’s quality and to support it by uploading reports from third parties as well as relevant vehicle documents.

Under “Determine vehicle state” you will find the fields “Condition category”, “Report”, “Registrations” and “Documents” with their respective selection menus and / or selectable boxes.

Under “Condition category” (23), indicate whether the condition of your vehicle is classified as original, authentic, restored, part restored, reconstruction, restoration project or part donor *.

Vehicle Condition

Under “Report” (24), indicate whether one is available or not. If you have an expert assessment report, please indicate which insurance company has issued it. You can also upload a scanned version of the report. In order to do so, select “Upload report” (25) and select the corresponding file on your computer.

Licence and registrationIf your vehicle has MOT / a historic license plate, FIVA or FIA? *² select the appropriate box under “registrations” (26). Also indicate whether your vehicle is registered and ready to drive *.

Vehicle documents

The documents section (27) allows you to upload scanned papers and all other relevant vehicle documents. You can freely enter which document it is and then add a digital copy using the “Upload file”-button. Depending on how many documents you want to upload, you can add or remove input lines using the – and + buttons.

When all boxes have been filled out to your satisfaction, click on “Continue” to complete step 4 and proceed to the last step.


Step 5: final overviewFinalisation and TranslationIn the last step, a preview (28) of your advertisement will be presented. To the right you can see an overview of the quality and completeness of your advertisement. Under “Quality of your listing” a bar graph is displayed showing the status of several points of your listing. This example is an almost perfect * listing as virtually all bars are shown in green. Still, there is always room for improvement. Below the graphic all points are listed that can be added/completed. In order to improve one of the listed points just click on “edit” next to it.

You can also add translations into different languages. These will be directly displayed in the free text segment on the corresponding country version of the Classic Trader website. The added value of this feature is that your comments on the vehicle can be read and understood by all visitors to the international Classic Trader online marketplace. You will be able to increase sales opportunities many times over with this feature.Your DataIn the last step you decide which personal data should be displayed in your advertisement. You can either make your name, your full address, your telephone number or all of this information visible to potential buyers. If so required you can raise your user account to the status of private seller free of charge. You do have to enter your date of birth to prove you are legally competent and capable of contracting.FinalisationWith a final click on “Proceed to checkout” (30) you’ll finish the creation of your advertisement. Once it’s online you can expect inquiries by email and telephone regarding your advertised vehicle.

In order to increase the reach of your high-quality advertisement and to raise the likelihood of selling the vehicle, you can also place it in various automobile magazines via our booking service. Through placements in magazines you will be able to address potential buyers who may not be reached via an online advertisement. Also ask our account management for a social media placement to further increase the reach of your advertisement!
