The BMW 6-Series E24 Coupé profile

For many BMW purists, the CS Coupés such as the E9 and E24 are still regarded as the epitome of sporting elegance. In March 1976 the BMW 6-Series 630 CS and 633 CSi, designed by Paul Bracq, took up the mantle of those iconic models.

The first BMW 6-Series (E24) offered sophisticated technology, safety and plentiful comfort. A dynamic power steering system adjusted dependent on the engines speed and was hailed as a milestone in car dynamics. Another innovation was the introduction of the Check Control Board system, which allowed the driver to monitor the status of key systems at the push of a button. Bronze tinted glass to keep the cabin cool, leather upholstery and electric windows were all par for the course in this luxury coupé.

Visually, the two vehicles differed in name alone, but the 633CSi’s 3210cc fuel-injected engine produced around 15bhp more than the 630 CS. The 630 CS was also offered in the American market as the 630 CSijust 1794 examples were built, making it a rare car today.

BMW 6-Series – Models of the E24

As early as 1978, BMW launched the 635 CSi, the most popular version of the E24. This car was once again a benchmark when it came to performance and comfort. At the time it was Germany’s fastest four-seater coupé with a top speed of 140mph. Engine displacement for this new model increased to 3453cc and produced an impressive 218bhp thanks in part to an optimised compression ratio.

It soon became more cost effective for the entire engine range to shift to fuel injection. From July 1979 the 630 CS was replaced by the 628 CSi, its 2788cc engine already proven in the 528i. With the help of a higher compression ratio, output increased to 184bhp.

Although not designed as a pure-bred sports car, the M635 CSi presented in 1984 is still considered a worthy follow-up to the legendary BMW M1. To the uninitiated, its only visual giveaway was a minimalist spoiler and the typical BMW Motorsport M in the grille. This new BMW M635 CSi had the same six-cylinder engine from the M1 supercar, but with two overhead camshafts allowing for 284bhp. The BMW M635 CSi could sprint from 0 to 62mph in under seven seconds – making it one of the fastest cars of its days.

BMW 6-Series Buying Advice

If you are looking to buy a BMW 6 Series E24 today, you should first think about what you will use the car for. Despite the more than generous basic equipment of the 6 Series, the E24 also had a long list of extras, with some being very difficult to acquire spares for.

The primary weakness in a classic 6 Series, especially in the early models, is rust. Many examples are already beyond saving due to a lack of protection from this menace. Special attention should be paid to the wheelhouses, boot, sills and especially the front wings. Also check the door boxes, rear apron, battery holder and suspension struts as these are also rust hotspots.

Seemingly unimportant items such as trim and chrome strips are difficult to find, so keep that in mind when viewing a car.

BMW 6-Series E24 Costs & Market Situation

The 6 Seriesextensive list of equipment makes checking the on-board electronics essential. Many of these toys arent critical to everyday use of an BMW E24, but the repair costs can soon build to eye-watering levels. Typically issues with the heater controls, alarm system and the door lock heater are well documented.

The E24s engines have proven hardy and relatively easy to maintain. As long as they have enough oil and water available, and the engine is left to warm up, this six-cylinder engines are a pleasure. Be sure to pay attention documents relating to service and maintenance history before buying.

The increasing popularity of this classic model should result in more spare parts and additional support being readily available in the near future. While the coveted ALPINA B7 Turbo Coupés are now happily traded for over 90,000, a BMW 6 Series can still be had for 15,000 – 20,000.
