MODEL HISTORY
Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973, the 2002 Turbo was the first turbocharged BMW and with the exception of some attempts by General Motors in the 60’s, is seen as the first turbocharged production car. Using the hugely successful 2002tii as its foundation, the Turbo used the same 2 Litre, 4-cylinder engine fitted with a KKK Turbocharger and a higher compression ratio. The result was 170bhp in a small, lightweight and rear wheel drive coupé, the perfect combination for a huge amount of performance and fun. Production only lasted from 1973-1974 during which time just 1,672 were built, all in left hand drive. Of these 1,672 only 43 were delivered new to the UK.
THIS MOTOR CAR
The BMW 2002 Turbo for sale at The Classic Motor Hub is one of those 43 UK cars. Built in March 1974 and delivered through BMW Concessionaires Ltd in April. Its first owner a Mr. John Cooper, immediately fitted some spot lights and a roll cage and competed in the Manx rally in 1974. According to the history file, this was the first appearance of a 2002 Turbo in International rallying!
Sometime after the rally the car was sent to Alpina UK who went right through the car before it ended up being bought by Richard Cound, the BMW dealer in Gloucester. Richard Cound maintained and owned the car right up until 1992 when it was bought by a local man who put the car away until his death in 2006. After passing into his wife’s name the car was eventually bought by the previous owner in 2011. Soon after purchase the Turbo was completely recommissioned by a local specialist using all genuine BMW parts.
There are pages upon pages of BMW invoices and photographs of the car as it was found and during the rebuild. We sold the car in 2017 to the current owner who added it to his collection of over 25 cars. Having pampered the car for the past three years, the decision has been made to consolidate the collection as a whole and so this 2002 Turbo is available once more.
This amazing example has now only covered 48,000 miles from new, has had just 4 owners in nigh on 40 years, and is in stunningly original condition. Accompanied by 4 history files with documentation going right back to 1978, including a BMW Certificate and service invoices from the late 70’s, this truly is an incredible opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic BMW’s in it’s rarest of forms, a UK delivered 2002 Turbo.
