A car with a long known & varied history with pictures of the car dating from the late 1940's. The first owner listed was one Percy Rose of Sefton Park. By the late 1960's the car was the property of a publican, a Mr Newsam of the Fox & Goose Inn on Pudding Pie hill Near Chesterfield. He rescued & ran a few old Rolls-Royces but regrettably died leaving his car to his son whom it seems was a bit of a wastrel allowing the car to fall into a somewhat ruinous state.
By the late 1980's the car had been purchased by a more sympathetic owner who set about completing a full & complete restortion of the car culminating in it winning assorted prizes at Rolls Royce Enthusiast events in the early 1990s when it was concours. Volumes of paperwork come with the car minutely describing the massive works undertaken to bring it back to the wonderful condition in which we find it today. Now nicely run in the car is in beautiful yet useable condition as evidenced by the current onwer who regularly drives her into Mayfair for dinner.
The current owner has not skimped on the car spending over £13,000 recently with marque specialist Jonathan Wood on a front end engine rebuild to cure noisy timing gears etc. The King Pins were also done a little while ago, this time by the irreproachable Ian Pinder of the respected RR&B garages resulting in taut steering without any free play whatsoever.
The body by Park Ward takes the form of a very rakish & desirable Sedanca with a large boot specified by the first onwer, to the rear for extended continental touring. To the rear passenger quarters are patterned cloth upholstery in a restrained manner which would not be out of place in a contemporary Avions Voisin Car. The Walnut has all been removed & refinished to a semi gloss making the rear a comfortable, bordering upon opulent place in which to spend time.
Paintwork is Oxford & Cambridge two tone blues again in very nice order with a light patina of use. The drivers compartment is of Blue leather again in excellent condition extending to a useful cushion attaching to the sedanca unit & acting as a comfortable head rest. A slide out tool tray under the front seats has the usual selection of large tools in it. During restoration simply eveything has been attended to from the gleaming chrome plated front lamps to the rear pork pie style reversing lamps.
Simply put this is a car that wants for nothing. The engine is rebuilt. The radiator re-cored. The wiring completely renewed in the correct cloth covered cabling in the requisite colours. Even the spare fuse & fuse wire bobbin are in their appointed places inside the fuse box lid. Undertrays are in situ & a modern spin off oil filter has been installed for ease of maintenance & an overdrive unit fitted for ease of driving. During restoration any rotten woodwork was removed & replaced with new ash framing.
The car starts readily & drives as a Vintage Rolls-Royce ought but very often does not, with silent engine & easy gear changes. During the test drive to take photographs I have to say that I struggled to find fault with the car which from me is high praise indeed. It is an exceptional car in well above average condition ready for immediate extended use that has been properly restored & more importantly properly maintained since.
