The Wolseley 9 was in production for just two years from 1934 and was powered by a 1018cc overhead cam engine capable of producing 59mph. The performance was very respectable for a mid sized Saloon car of this era and only 7200 examples were ever built in the form of Saloons, Tourer and Limousines. These cars were surprisingly roomy inside and the Saloon was an ideal family car of the 1930’s. We are delighted to have BXL 684 back with us eight years on since selling it to the most recent owner, a Sheffield based collector and long-term regular customer of ours. This is no doubt the absolute best Wolseley 9 Saloon we’ve seen in almost thirty years in the business. Since last seeing the Wolseley back in 2012 it has been carefully dry stored and kept in beautifully detailed condition.
BXL 684 was first registered on 26th March 1935 and by 1976 at 41 years old it needed major restoration work. On 31st January 1976 the Wolseley changed hands in Leicester for £200 and over the next eight years was treated to a superbly executed full rebuild. A wonderful photo album accompanies the pages of invoices and shows the body coming off the chassis and a ground up rebuild being carried out.
The car was taken back to the bare chassis which was refurbished and fully re-painted, the body was taken to bare metal, completely restored and re-painted in Black. The engine was fully rebuilt, as was all the running gear, electrical items, braking system, steering and suspension. The interior was superbly re-furbished, all brightwork re-chromed and by the mid 1980's was on the rally and show scene picking up prizes and awards. The car stayed with its proud owner and restorer for many, many years with photos on file at various events.
When the Wolseley arrived with us in 2012 we described it as a a car ideal for showing with an exceptional paint finish, stunning chrome and wonderful Brown leather upholstery. Eight years on we can say the same, the car is truly beautiful and it really is remarkable this car was restored so many years ago. There is no doubt this was a top class rebuild and careful use and ownership since has ensured it has remained in beautiful condition, ideal for shows, rallies and weekend countryside touring. The car has a true patina, the upholstery and leather work feels just right, and the car has real presence and a wonderful gleam.
This is a special car, there are not many left that have had this level of work and with a fabulous fit, strong engine and sweet gearbox, this is a Wolseley 9 that can be driven with confidence and really enjoyed.. Accompanying the photo album and invoices are lots of club bulletins, original handbook, newspapers from 1935 and various data sheets and model information.
