Das beste oder Nichts, still the slogan of Mercedes-Benz and in this case: completely true. The Mercedes-Benz W188 300S Coupé was by far the most opulent car on the market in the 1950s. The W188 300S was the Coupé, Cabriolet or Roadster variant of the world famous "Adenauer". The W188 series was introduced at the Paris motor show in 1951. Although the car was given the designation "300S", it would not be until 1972 before Mercedes-Benz would start offering models such as S-Class. Mercedes-Benz built a total of 560 units of different body styles. 216 pieces are the Coupés shown here. The car weighs 1,740 kilograms and thanks to the 150-hp engine it reaches a top speed of 175 kilometres per hour. The W188 was built entirely by hand and was the first car with power-assisted brakes. The W188 was really a car for the "Rich and famous" of that time. Famous owners were Haribo founder Hans Riegel, Aga Khan and actor Gary Cooper, so you were in very good company as the owner of a W188. This specific W188 comes from Switzerland and is in beautiful condition.

The body of this example looks beautiful and has been fully restored in the past. During the restoration, the car was completely repainted and the chrome on the body was also completely renewed. The car is a beautiful example from the very first glance. The sheet metal is nice and thin and the fits are correct. It is also striking that this 300S is equipped with a sliding roof, great for the days when it is a bit warmer. It is said that this is one of a total of six cars delivered that was fitted with a sliding roof ex-works. The paint is still in beautiful condition with only some minimal traces of use. The car has the original wheels fitted with wheel covers and tires in the correct sizes.

The interior was completely reupholstered during the restoration and is in very good condition. The leather is wonderfully supple and has a beautiful original look. The carpets have been completely refitted and fit beautifully throughout. The wood on the dashboard has been completely repainted and is also in top condition, as are the instruments and controls. When you take a seat in the spacious cabin, you immediately notice that this is a top-class S-class Mercedes-Benz. What is also striking is that the headliner has been beautifully adapted to the later applied sliding roof.

The technique is always top-maintained and completely overhauled during the restoration. The 300S is powered by a 3.0 liter M188 engine that would later serve in further developed form in the 300SL Gullwing. In this case, the engine produces 150 hp and is mated to a four-speed manual transmission, the controls of which are mounted on the steering column. The engine and transmission work together in beautiful harmony, allowing the 300S to move in complete comfort. The brakes and chassis were very advanced for that time and ensure that the car still has a modern driving style today.

The car will be delivered including a folder with general documentation and a number of photos of the restoration work carried out. In short, an absolute top coupé of yesteryear in fantastic condition and with a beautiful colour scheme.
