The Two-Seat Convertible That Made History – the 1956 Ford Thunderbird
With the Thunderbird, Ford gave the world the concept of the personal car. Sporting in appearance and powered by a muscular V8 under the bonnet, it was at the same time far more restrained than a Chrysler or Buick of the era. In its debut year of 1955, its tailfins and chromed front end appeared almost modest by comparison.
Considerably more comfortable than the spartan offerings from Jaguar and MG, the Thunderbird presented itself as a more affordable alternative to the European competition that was then taking America by storm. That said, it was clear the Thunderbird did not feature the chassis sophistication of a Coventry-built XK120. Instead, it offered accessories such as the Continental Kit: an externally mounted spare wheel in period style. This not only enhanced its luxurious appearance but also increased boot capacity. Within just ten days, Ford sold 3,500 Thunderbirds, comfortably outpacing the then much weaker Corvette C1.
Our Thunderbird is the most powerful version of its model year, specified as a “Special” with the 5.1-litre engine. The original owner additionally ordered power steering, power-assisted brakes, electrically adjustable seats and a heater. Finished in Ford’s Fiesta Red and equipped with the factory hardtop, the car has been in the same ownership since 2016. Four years ago, approximately CHF 20,000 was invested in a comprehensive overhaul of the steering, brakes and electrics. In the same year, the Thunderbird was issued with a FIVA identity card.
The car now sits on new, period-correct whitewall tyres, and all invoices from recent years are available. Freshly veteran-certified in spring 2025, this Thunderbird drives impeccably.
