On offer is this stunning ’57 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible. Without a doubt the most iconic open American classic of all times. Ask any stranger to cars if the name ‘Chevrolet Bel Air’ rings a bell, and most likely they’ll refer to a convertible.
Chevrolet build the Bel Air from 1950 to 1975 with its main focus on the American market. Production ran up to 1981 for the Canadian market. The model line actually exists of many variants divided into 7 generations. The first generation ran from 1950 to ’54, followed by the 2nd generation from ‘55 to ’57. It’s the 2nd generation which is the most sought after by collectors and purists. Within the 2nd generation more specifically, the 1957 model is the most desirable of all ‘Bel Airs’. The Bel Air of those times brings to mind icons such as Elvis Presley & Marilyn Monroe, just to name a few.
For the ’57 model version the tail fins were increased but remained small and elegant compared to other manufacturers. A ’57 Bel Air is to be recognized for its aluminum trim on the rear fins combined with the two chrome hood ornaments. The front and rear logo are finished in gold look.
Finished in its ‘matador red’ lacquer the car is in excellent condition both aesthetically as well as technically. It really is a stunning example which has been previously restored with a high level of detail. The body panels are free of dents, dings and the sort of ripples often seen in classics. The panel gaps are good, and the doors open and close with more than the usual degree of precision. The exterior chrome work is equally in a very high finish. The electrical convertible top functions without a hiccup and its white vinyl is in perfect condition. Aside of a very small ‘ chip’ on the passenger door and a crack in the logo it would be classified as ‘concours’.
Equipped with the optional 283ci V8 (4640cc) 4-barrel carburetor engine and its accompanied power glide automatic gearbox, the car starts on the button and runs beautifully. Even after standing for a while the car starts without any need of help.
Getting into the car on the driver’s side, its matching red and silver interior stands out. The steering wheel and dashboard come across as unrestored and have a very nice finish. Reading the odo-meter it shows 62663 kilometer! Note that this is kilometers as the speedometer reaches 240, while the American market was equipped with 120mph speedometers. Accompanied with a tag under the hood that shows “motorfahrzeug prüfstation beider basel” it seems fair to assume the car was delivered in Switzerland with original kilometer speedometer.
Furthermore the car has had a technical check up with all the brakes being serviced. This makes the car ready to enjoy and a potential buyer can assume the car does not need anymore work to be done to it.
“Hop in and drive into the distance!”
