Buick 40 Special (1951)

An icon of post-war American car design, the 1951 Buick is easily recognisable. The rounded Fisher body is lavishly decorated with a signature chrome grille and 3 distinguished ventiports. This particular 1951 Buick is an original survivor, that was last registered in Wisconsin.

Presented in an older respray of its factory original colour, the paint shows various imperfections. This definitely ads to the car’s character. The body is mostly solid and shows a few signs of metalwork in typical weak areas: the trunk floor and left rear sill panel. The lower end of the right hand is rusty and will need some attention. Chassis and underbody show a lot of surface rust, but appear to be solid, without signs of previous work.

The interior is in well-preserved original condition, with clean cloth upholstery and decent carpets. Some light wear on the door trim panels, as well as a minor tear in the headlining.

Powered by the silky smooth 4.3 litre Fireball straight 8 engine, the Buick runs nicely and starts easily. Manual transmission (three on the tree). The mileage of 61.086 is believed to be original. An old lubrication sticker can be found on the inside of the driver’s side windscreen pilar. The note shows service inspections from 1970 (42.175 mls) to 1980 (48.000 mls).

A nice survivor with a characterful amount of patina, this Buick Eight can be enjoyed as-is, or restored to perfection.
