1939 | Morgan 4/4 Serie I

Introduced in 1936, this new Morgan model was the first to have both four cylinders and four wheels. Initially known as the 4-4, the car featured a Coventry Climax engine, but this was replaced in 1938 by a 1267cc Standard Special overhead valve unit mated to a four-speed Moss Gearbox. It soon gained a good reputation for lively performance and excellent handling, with many successes on the track Previously owned by a senior staff member at the Morgan factory, this is an ultra-rare Drophead Coupe, which was restored in the 1990s by marque specialists to concours condition. A matching numbers car, still in its original blue/black colour scheme, it is the fourth production example of only fifteen Standard Special Coupes built before the outbreak of WWII. It was a national concours winner at MOG 2015 and has been carefully preserved in superb condition.




First supplied to Morgan main agents J Coryton of South Kensington on June 21st 1939, it seems likely it was kept by them during the war years before being sold to a new owner in London. There is a buff log book detailing previous owners, and a wealth of history going back 86 years!. It also benefits from a VSCC Eligibility form in the Post-Vintage Thoroughbred class.




This Morgan comes with two files, detailing its maintenance history, with lots of invoices, correspondence and technical information. On the road, FXP 259 is remarkably positive to drive and quite lively for a pre-war car. As a drophead coupe it benefits from doors with glass windows as is a very useable touring machine.
