Beschreibung

A really interesting SLC; being an Italian-market early model with the V8 engine and a four-speed manual transmission.

First launched in 1971 together with the SL, the SLC was an radical departure from its predecessor, the 280SE 3.5 Coupé. Although the SLC effectively replaced the stacked-headlamp coupé, it was a very different kind of car and the first and last ‘big coupé’ not to be based on the formal S-Class, but on the sporty SL instead.

It was essentially an SL but with a few extra inches between the doors and the rear wheels, giving space for adult-sized rear seats, and a fixed roof with pillarless side windows.

The engine, as fitted to this 350SLC, was a direct carry-over having only been in production for a couple of years, and it was one of the very few occasions in the history of Mercedes passenger cars where the buyer could specify a V8 engine and a manual gearbox.

Early SL/SLCs have quite a few unique features like seats without headrests, only one small mirror, different instrumentation and steering wheel. Yet these cars are rarely seen today.

This 350SLC, in Silver Grey with dark blue cloth interior, was first registered in Milan, late in 1972, by Automobili Genghini, Mercedes concessioners.

There appear to have been just four owners from new and the car never moved far, being registered in Trieste by the late 70s and lately around Verona. Only 115k KM (circa 71k miles) from new.

This is a car that has evidently been kept indoors throughout its life and is largely original and unrestored. Having lived in the kinder climate of Northern Italy, the underside is in exceptional condition with zero corrosion or previous repairs – rare to see on an SLC in this country certainly. The bodywork, as the photos show is very tidy and presentable with only a few minor blemishes. The wheels wear those lovely painted caps in excellent condition and a new set of matching tyres fitted less than 6 months ago.

The interior is remarkable and shows that this car has been kept inside. The seat upholstery, door cards and dashboard are immaculate. Even the sun visors (usually tarnished) are superb. There has never been a radio fitted and the original blanking plate with 350SLC script is still in place.

Pleasingly, all the original early-type books and manuals, still in their wallet, come with the car along with registration booklet.

Recently passed Italian roadworthiness test. New tyres, new exhaust, new diff seals and recent service detailed in the paperwork.

Supplied with Italian export certificate so can be registered in Europe without import tax, or can be UK registered for a UK buyer.

In summary, a rare, interesting and very well-preserved early, manual 350SLC. A great classic to enjoy as it is or perhaps an ideal candidate for classic rallies.
