1949 Neu an Generalmajor Sir Aymer Maxwell geliefert
The Bentley Mark VI 4-door standard steel sports saloon was the first post-was model from Bentley. Announced in May 1946 and produced from 1946 to 1952 it was also both the first car from Rolls-Royce with all-steel standardised coachwork, and the first complete car assembled and finished at their factory. These very expensive cars were a genuine success, with a considerable export demand, chassis continued of course to be supplied to independent coachbuilders to suit the demands of individual purchasers.
A small number of these fine motor cars were bespoke finished to order via coachbuilders Harold Radford's new and fashionable South Kensington premises. The specialised in lavishly fitted Countryman shooting brake designs, fitted out for racing and sporting use.
This fabulous specimen was delivered new to Major General Sir Aymer Maxwell in 1949 for use an his 17,000 acre estate, his ancestral home in the Dumfries and Galloway region of the Scottish borders. An expensive bespoke model very unusually built to two-door configuration, it was the third car produced by Radford and was one of the few cars made for extremely wealthy owners who could afford such a luxurious automobile at a time of truly punitive taxation.
The previous owner purchased the Bentley from a retired GP who had owned the car for 35 years and had restored the car over a 20 year period to the point it needed little other than the retrimming of its leather interior. This was done using the seven rolls of the original Connolly hide which came with the car when he purchased it. There is a photographic record of the superb restoration work done to the car during the decades of the previous owner's tenure. There is also a large history file of communication between the Doctor and Harold Radford, and also with Sir Aymer Maxwell, with, interestingly, a few period pictures of the car in the Mediterranean where he often resided. The Bentley is nom, painted in the original grey livery, with the original matching grey leather interior and new carpets. The original spotsearch lamps can be fitted an the scuttles if required. The Vendor recently snake to the current Lord Maxwell who remembers the car with great fondness, with his Uncle driving him very quickly from their London residence to their estates in Scotland. There are many further references to the way that Sir Aymer drove his Bentley very quickly and is mentioned several times in the book Party in the Blitz by his dose friend Nobel Prize winner Elias Canetti.
This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire an extremely collectable Radford Shooting Brake Bentley, now presented in fabulous condition.
