The Alfa Romeo GT 1600 Junior was introduced in 1972, to plug the gap between the GT 1300 Junior and the newly introduced GTV 2000. The engine was substantially the same as the Giulia Sprint GTV discontinued four years previously and had the same engine type number. The final drive ratio was again 9/41 as standard on all 105 series coupes with the 1290cc and 1570cc engines. From 1974 onwards, the GT 1300 Junior and GT 1600 Junior were rationalised onto a common platform of models with the GTV 2000 and rebadged as the 1.3 GT Junior and 1.6 GT Junior respectively, sharing most of the interior and exterior features of the larger engine car. Production ended in 1976/77 and totalled 13,120 units for the 1.6 GT Juniors. A flourishing market has emerged with companies producing spare parts and upgrades for the Alfa 105 range, most notably Alfaholics with their GTA replicas.
This example was imported from South Africa and has been owned by the current vendor for over ten years, during which it has been carefully enjoyed and maintained. Restored in South Africa to a high standard prior to import, the car continues to present very well today, with tidy bodywork, smart paint and a well-finished interior reflecting the quality of the work carried out. Shortly after purchase, the vendor undertook an engine rebuild, ensuring the car was mechanically sound from the start. Since then, it has been maintained particularly well, with a substantial history file documenting over a decade of work, including numerous invoices from Classic Alfa. The car has also been enhanced with Alfaholics chassis strengthening plates, a wax-based rustproofing treatment, a lightweight starter and battery, C&camshafts, and a stainless-steel exhaust, all sensibly chosen to improve driving experience while retaining the GT Junior's character.
Accompanied by a comprehensive history file detailing restoration work, parts invoices, and maintenance records, this GT 1600 Junior represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire a well-restored, mechanically sorted example with over a decade of careful stewardship. It would make a fantastic addition to any Alfa Romeo collection or a highly usable classic for those looking to enjoy one of the marque's most desirable early coupes. Consigned by Fraser Smith
